Reiki FAQ

What can I expect from a Reiki session?

There is no expected experience – Reiki treatment is unique for each individual who receives it. What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies somewhat from person to person. However, feelings of deep relaxation are usually felt by all. In addition, many feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and surrounds them. As the Reiki energy encourages one to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings, a state of peace and well-being is experienced. Some drift off to sleep. At the end of the treatment, one feels refreshed with a more positive, balanced outlook.

How many Reiki sessions do people require?

It is recommended for people with chronic conditions, four consecutive treatments or as close as possible together. Then it is recommended to have weekly treatments for about four to six weeks. However, your Reiki Practitioner can provide guidance on what is suitable for you. Each session will build up the energy in the system. The treatments can then be reviewed accordingly. Each person is different and effects can be instant or take a few weeks to integrate. Again, no two cases are the same.

How can Reiki help my wellbeing?

Reiki is reported to have helped a broad range of conditions, from skin conditions to cancer. Reiki is a healing therapy which means it brings your body back to a place of balance and harmony. With a balanced energy system, you will have more vital energy available to be used as your body needs. Healing is a process. Reiki has done a lot for people’s health. Reiki Practitioners can never claim to cure, as Reiki works with everyone individually.

Can I have Reiki if I am on medication?

Yes, you may. Reiki is being used in many hospitals world wide along side conventional therapies.

What happens during a Reiki treatment?

During a Reiki treatment, you will lay fully clothed on a massage table, covered in a blanket if you choose, listening to soothing music. Your Reiki practitioner will agree with you to either use laying or floating hands approach; they will use a series of hand positions to deliver Reiki energy over your body. A Reiki treatment generally covers first your head, then the front of your body and finally the back of your body. If the reclined position is uncomfortable, Reiki can be done while you sit in a chair or on a stool.

Is there any removal of clothing during Reiki treatments?

There is no need for any removal of clothing during treatments. You generally will be asked to remove your shoes. You can loosen a top button on a shirt or loosen a belt to make yourself more comfortable. However, even this is not necessary.

Do I have to believe in Reiki in order for it to work?

No. Reiki works even if you don’t believe in it. Reiki works on unconscious patients, people in comas, babies and animals. They have no conscious awareness about Reiki. The acceptance of Reiki energy during a Reiki treatment operates below conscious thought. It is the subconscious desires of the person in receipt of the Reiki energy that will determine whether the energy is taken in or not.

Is Reiki a religion?

No, it is not. People of all religious persuasions and belief systems practice this healing art. Reiki has some of its roots in Japan, but it is not tied to Buddhism. Reiki helps people to connect with their inner self on a deep level. In this way it is spiritual.
